Hiking the verdant paradise of McArthur-Burney Falls

Called “the eighth wonder of the world” by President Teddy Roosevelt, this is truly a place you have to experience for yourself. Generated by both snowmelt and underground springs, McArthur-Burney Falls in Northern California flows over and through a volcanic landscape to create one of the most unique and beautiful waterfalls on the planet. Only a few minutes’ walk from your car, and with campgrounds and a general store nearby, this is a perfect place to enjoy a summer afternoon.

McArthur-Burney is a super-easy waterfall to access. You can get to the base of the falls within about a 10-minute hike down a paved path; it’s a great place to have a snack and enjoy the view. It’s all downhill to the base of the falls, so be prepared for a little uphill on the way back, or you can continue on to do a 1.3-mile loop trail and get different vantage points of the falls. Rocks can be extremely slippery, though, so watch your step.
