Non-pretentious yoga festivals that are more om, less OMG

Know what sounds great? A whole weekend of doing yoga, seeing music, and eating good food in a beautiful place. Unfortunately, given the wrong vibe, yoga festivals can turn into pretentious chi-adjusting sessions or a creep-fest (remember the guy in the toilet in Boulder? Because I do.). Here’s where to go to a yoga festival and not get breathed on by uppity old dudes in batik pants.

Wanderlust is the Coachella of yoga events. Big, big name, and jam packed. In addition to a huge number of yoga classes, there are shows, speakers, food, and outdoor adventures, so you can pick what suits you. Not into meditation? You can go for a run instead. There are seven this summer, from Oahu to Quebec, but our pick is the June event in Snowshoe, West Virginia.

For four days in July, you can take in the first-ever Steamboat Movement Fest, which is just as much about the local Steamboat Springs, Colorado, scene as it is the yoga. They’re bringing in big-name bands, and after you get your fill of yoga, you can bike on the local trails, which are all-time, or fish the Yampa.

It doesn’t get more New England perfect than yoga on a farm on Nantucket in July. The food will be particularly good, but so will the classes, and the views. Plus, the alcohol sponsor (because there is one) is local island-based Cisco Brewery.

A mellow, Midwestern take on the yoga festival, cOMmon Grounds Yoga and Music Festival, which takes place on a lake right outside of Minnesota’s Twin Cities, has food trucks, movie nights, and a bunch of musicians. There’s even horseback riding available.

OK, we can’t vouch for the non-pretentiousness of this one, but holy moly, sign me up for yoga in an Italian vineyard.
