While you save up the big bucks to make that eventual ski pilgrimage to Alaska, ski magazine Powder will help stoke the excitement with its newest online project, “Frozen In Time.” The unique multimedia piece takes us to the Last Frontier’s Denali National Park, where we follow professional skiers Ian McIntosh, Johnny Collinson, and Angel Collinson into some of the most awe-inspiring terrain in the world.
This isn’t your normal ski magazine piece, as Powder has once again upped the ante on multimedia journalism to create a cutting edge, interactive flip book that puts readers at base camp with the athletes. Powder readers get pieces of McIntosh’s personal diary entries as they stare up at 14,753-foot Mt. Hunter, with temperatures plummeting below zero and winds whipping across the open ice fields. The experience becomes visceral, something far beyond what we are used to from the comfort of our office chairs.

But that is exactly what Powder is going for—bringing the mountains to us. Every day these athletes are out accomplishing incredible things, yet sometimes those accomplishments can fall flat on the page. To avoid that trap Powder, with the help of The North Face and Sherpas Cinema, employed video, diagrams, charts, and testimonials along with their text and visuals to give the complete experience (well minus the frost bite from -40-degree temperatures).
And while more than 50 pages may seem like a lot for one story, each page has a designated purpose, either utilizing text, video, or simply photography to tell the tale without overwhelming. The result is a cleanly laid out story that flows so nicely you won’t realize you’ve hit the end until the credits start rolling across the page.
