Andrew Armour, a diving guide known for years as the Whale Whisperer, showed why his nickname is appropriate when while guiding a diving tour off Dominca Island in the Caribbean he prompted a sperm whale to mimic his actions.
Underwater photographer Scott Belt filmed the amazing interaction which he called “a once-in-a-lifetime experience” and “unbelievable.” Belt shared his video with Caters News:
Armour began spinning in the water in front of the sperm whale, to which the whale responded by spinning, too.
“I was completely surprised by what I was witnessing in person and capturing on video,” Belt told BT.com of the U.K. “There was no advanced plan that the guide would try to get the whale to react.”
Armour, who runs whale-watching tours from Roseau in Dominica, has been swimming up close with whales since the early ‘90s.
“The performance of spinning and getting them to do likewise is simply from my idea that they should also be enjoying the interaction, and that is what makes what I do so successful,” the Whale Whisperer told BT.com.
“These animals have been spending great lengths of time off Dominica’s west coast. This means that I have been able to do quite a bit of interaction with these whales from the time I started swimming with them.
“It is a joy to have worked with these sperm whales for the benefit of my clients who want to swim with them.”
Certainly the Whale Whisperer lived up to his nickname on this trip.
