Sea lion shadows 7-year-old Alex, who has Asperger’s Syndrome; photo is a screen grab from the video

A little boy with Asperger’s Syndrome, described as having difficulty in social interaction and nonverbal communication, had little trouble interacting with a sea lion at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo on Sunday.

Alex, 7, became fast friends with a sea lion that began shadowing him as he ran back and forth in front of the tank window as his mother Jennifer Bittner videotaped the incredible and touching scene.

The remark by Alex at the 1:05 mark is absolutely precious. Watch:

“This is the best thing of my life,” Alex says near the end of the video.

Jennifer and Mark Bittner, along with sons Alex and Zachary, 9, got to the National Zoo early, before the crowds arrived, allowing for enough space for Alex to run back and forth and create the magic moment.

“They happily followed each other for several minutes, and it was an incredible experience watching the two of them connect,” Jennifer wrote on her YouTube post.

“So glad I got the camera rolling in time!”

So are we.
