Soccer moms unite! It’s time for some you time

If you’re a mom, you know how hard it is to make time for yourself. You may even find that a trip to the grocery sans kids is all “alone time” you ever get. And time with your friends? Like that’s going to happen. You’ve got to get the kids out to soccer practice, hold down the fort when your husband is out on a business trip, and, let’s not forget, get in those 40 hours per week at your full-time job.

This is why a recent standup paddleboarding road trip set up by mom Jody Nelson got us so inspired. She spearheaded an escape that she and her old friends (and fellow soccer moms) have been talking about for years but never got around to taking.

“We’re moms, we’re wives, we always come last, so finally this summer we were like, ‘This is it,’” says LeeAnn Glasser, a friend of Nelson’s.

What was so inspiring about the road trip, which led to paddleboarding and camping around Michigan’s gorgeous Upper Peninsula, was that it was the kind of trip that, no doubt, created memories that will last for the rest of these moms’ lives.

It was more than a lunch date, which usually consists of just a few hours of gossiping about the husbands and kiddos. It was something that allowed for the type of bonding that only occurs when you step outside your comfort zone with the support of people who love you.

“The longest that I have ever paddled is one mile around a small lake near my house, and this trip is three times that,” says one of Nelson’s friends.

And the road tripping aspect? That was the best part. There’s nothing quite like hours on the road to get you talking and reconnecting with old friends.

“It’s amazing how fun long drives can be when you’re with your friends, especially if everyone’s willing to be spontaneous,” says one of Nelson’s road trippin’ friends.

Of course, it always helps to have someone like Nelson as your ringleader to encourage you along the way.

So the next time you ignore that phone call from an old friend because you’ve got a nose to wipe and a mouth to feed, remember Nelson and her friends. Pick up that phone, plan that trip, and tell the husband it’s his turn to watch the kids (even if that means they’ll be eating McDonald’s nonstop for the next few days and wearing dirty clothes).

The next steps? Round up your friends and get out on the road.
