Is it just us, or did the advent of drone photography kind of make you nostalgic for the real thing? Maybe that’s why we were so enthralled by “Above America,” a short film compiled from video shot in the 1980s by filmmaker Harrison Sanborn’s father.
Re-scanned, edited and colored from an Arri IIC camera with Eastman Kodak 5247 film, the result is a soaring ride across the country set to the epic “Ride of the Valkyries,” Sanborn’s homage to the famous scene from “Apocalypse Now.”
Sanborn (a third-generation aerial cinematographer and pilot) says his father shot the aerial footage while ferrying a helicopter to the East Coast from California. It’s a rush to fly over the country’s iconic natural landscapes and man-made features—seeing the Twin Towers again is especially thrilling.
