Pipeline: The greatest show in surf

For over 40 years Pipeline has held center stage in surfing. While more recent big-wave discoveries such as Teahupoo and Mavericks have provided incredible waves and iconic moments, it is Pipeline that still holds the mantle as surfing’s ultimate proving ground.

That is partly due to the history, partly due to the condensed nature of Pipeline’s prime season, and partly because of its location in Hawaii. However, it is mostly due to the wave itself. No other wave breaks with such power and ferocity so close to shore. No other wave attracts the number and quality of big-wave surfers. And no other wave is documented like Pipeline.

This winter has been no different. At various stages over the last two months Pipeline has further cemented its reputation. This clip above has captured every non-competition wave of note and caught every wincing wipeout. It is a seven-minute tribute to the wave, and the surfers who manage to tame it. It features a mix of established Pipe heroes such as Bruce Irons, Reef McIntosh, and Danny Fuller, as well next gen talents including Koa Rothman, Kiron Jabour, and Nate Florence. Fittingly it ends with John John Florence and Jamie O’Brien, the two men who are the undisputed stars of the greatest show in surf.
