Deion Sanders said every team he played for during his 14-year career in the NFL had a gay player on the roster.
While discussing openly gay NFL draft prospect Michael Sam on ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ last week, the Hall of Famer insisted that the Missouri defensive end won’t be the first gay player in the league’s history, but rather the first one to play after making the information public.
“I don’t condone or condemn, but I’m going to love him,” said Sanders. “He’s not the first gay guy in the NFL. He’s the first one to come out. Let’s get that straight.”
Sanders later said that he believes, inside and outside the NFL, everyone knows someone who is gay, adding that people should not be judged for their sexual orientation. He continued, “Everybody in the NFL is always talking about football as a family, but when you have the opportunity to really extend and show that you’re a family member, this is the opportunity.”
In related news, the former NFL star is back in the reality television saddle, this time starring in series for the OWN Network produced by girlfriend Tracey Edmonds. Watch the first five minutes of ‘Deion’s Family Playbook’ after the jump!
